How Cookies Help Here
Cookie banners usually hide a long list. Ours does not, because there is almost nothing to list. This page sets out what is stored, why and how to remove it.
The list in four lines
- No analytics cookies.
- No advertising or retargeting cookies.
- No social media tracking scripts.
- One small entry in your browser's local storage that remembers your banner answer.
Cookies and local storage, briefly
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep, which is sent back to the server with later requests. Local storage is similar but stays inside your browser and is not sent with requests. We use local storage, and only for one thing.
What the entry does
When you click either button on the banner, your browser saves a short note of that choice for this site. On your next page view the site reads the note and keeps the banner closed. The note contains your answer and nothing that identifies you. It never leaves your device.
| Entry | Stored in | Job | Kept until |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banner choice | Your browser's local storage | Stops the banner reappearing | Until you clear site data |
Clearing or changing your answer
Open your browser's settings, find the section for site data or cookies and storage, and clear the data for this site. The banner will show again on your next visit and you can choose afresh. Private or incognito windows usually discard the note when you close them.
Logs kept by the host
Separate from the browser, the hosting provider that delivers our pages keeps standard server logs. Those are covered on Privacy & Data.
Why we skipped tracking
A notebook of practical answers does not need to know who you are. Leaving out analytics and ad scripts also keeps pages light, which matters on a slow connection or an older laptop. The trade-off is that we do not know which articles are read most; reader emails tell us what is useful instead.
Clicking through to other sites
Links in our articles lead to other websites with their own cookie practices. Check their banners and policies when you arrive.
Should a cookie ever be added
Should a future feature need another cookie, this page will be updated before the feature goes live, and the banner will say so. Questions? Use the contact page.
