The Crew and the Plan
The idea came from a shared folder. Four people kept sending each other the same kind of question: which router for a narrow terraced house, how to chase an invoice without souring a client, what "estimated reading" means on a bill. The answers were scattered across forums, manuals and help pages. Writing them down properly, in one place, seemed more useful than answering them one email at a time.
The idea in one line
Practical notes on the things that keep a home and a small business running, written so you can act on them the same day.
Pen names and patches
We write under pen names. None of us is a lawyer, accountant, engineer or financial adviser, and we do not dress up as one.
| Pen name | Looks after |
|---|---|
| Osgar | Screens, routers, streaming boxes and the software side of the Tech section. |
| Wynstan | Invoices, payments, marketing and the rest of the Business desk. |
| Ferelith | Property, measuring up and home upkeep across Estate and Household. |
| Ismay | Travel, energy and the legal basics, plus a final read of every piece before it goes out. |
What we try to do
- Answer the actual question. If the title asks how, the article explains how, near the top.
- Show the trade-offs. A cheaper option, a slower option, an option that needs a professional: we list them side by side.
- Stay general where it matters. Legal and money topics depend on where you live. We describe the usual shape of a process and send you to the official source for the specifics.
- Keep it current. Older posts are reviewed when readers flag a change.
What we leave to others
We do not give personal financial, legal or tax advice. We do not trade, broker, lend or sell services. Where an article mentions a company or product, it is there because it fits the topic, and you should compare options yourself before you sign anything.
How the work flows
A question arrives, from a reader or from our own week. One of us drafts an answer, checks it against manuals, official guidance and the maker's documentation, and passes it on. A second person reads it as a newcomer would and marks anything vague. Only then does it go live. The longer version is on Standards We Keep.
Bring us a question
If you have a question that keeps coming up at your desk or kitchen table, send it through the contact page. It may well become the next note. For an overview of the site itself, see About Newbold Business Notes.
Team rules
The rules all four pen names follow
Four pen names, one set of habits.
- Answer the question in the title before anything else.
- Name the limits: place, provider, contract or model.
- Never claim a qualification none of us holds.
- Hand every draft to a second reader before it goes out.
- Fix errors on the page and move the date.
Tell us what you think.
A short note is enough.
